Dental Hygiene 101
Oral hygiene is the simplest intervention that can have immediate and long lasting effects for one’s oral health and general wellness. While this might sound redundant to many of you, it’s important to review the basics before we progress to more advanced strategies.
Brush twice per day, and ideally no sooner than one hour after a meal. The mouth is in a naturally more acidic state immediately after a meal, and brushing too soon may cause erosion for some individuals.4
Most dentists recommend fluoride-containing toothpastes. Individuals avoiding fluoride and those with advanced dental decay and sensitivity might benefit from newer remineralizing toothpastes, which can be found with or without fluoride such as Recaldent6 or CariFree.
Floss at least once per day! If you are experiencing challenges with your oral health this is a must. Certain health conditions might necessitate a particular dental floss or flossing strategy. Please speak with you dental healthcare professional if you have any questions as to the right approach for your condition.
Consume sugar, dried fruits, and refined and processed carbohydrates sparingly (especially those that stick to your teeth). They are best included as part of a balanced meal rather than eaten separately.
Don’t bathe your teeth in acid by sipping all day on acidic drinks! Sports drinks, citrus juices, sugar-free beverages and even coffee are acidic and can be highly erosive to your teeth when you sip on it all day.8
