Promoting Oral Health - Antioxidants and Free Radicals
Oxidative stress is a major contributing factor to most chronic diseases, including dental decay and gum disease. This condition occurs when our bodies exposure to free radicals, overwhelm it’s antioxidant defense systems. Free radicals are unstable molecules that lack electrons, and attempt to steal electrons from other molecules. Antioxidants neutralize their potentially damaging effect by donating electrons to the unstable free radicals. While both free radicals and antioxidants play important roles within the body, in today’s modern world most people lack sufficient antioxidants.
One consequence of oxidative stress is the over activation of enzymes within our teeth and gums that remove damaged materials so that repairs can occur. Whereas a balanced body knows when to tell these enzymes to stop their demolition work, an imbalanced system will struggle to manage the process. The end results are enzymes, which destroy both healthy and damaged tissues, dentin, and bone, and contribute to bacterial damage occurring within the mouth. Fortunately it’s relatively easy to maintain a healthy balance within the body through simple dietary and lifestyle improvements.
